Tail wags and French kisses, we are Mimi and Rocky. Welcome to our pawprints in cyberspace!!! Our page has lotsa links to info about our breed, the Bichon Frise (Bee-Shawn Free-Zay). We have our mugs in the Photo Gallery, we have a page devoted to fellow Bichons Frises with webpages (see Bichons on the Web), we have a Bookshelf with nothing but "dog" books you can order from Amazon, a Bichon Clipart page where our mom keeps all her doggy doodlings, a petnames page, and more...  We live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our birthdates are 01-12-97 and 09-20-98. We are not "frou frou" dogs. We love to dig in the mud, bark at the neighbor's German Shepard, T.P. the house, do crazy eights, and pounce on our cats. Mom says we are show dog material... if she could just find a judge that would dismiss short legs, rust stained eyes, muddy noses, and poop caked butts.

When Daddy's at the dinin' table, she's right there.
Momma doesn't like it, but Daddy doesn't care.
If there's meat on the counter, you know it's not safe:
She can jump like a Kangaroo and run like a thief.
And she'll get away with the dastardly act,
'cause she's got an "accessory after the fact."

reed Description

Its name Bichon Frise (Bee-Shawn Free-zay) means "curly lap dog" in French.The Bichon Frise is appreciated for its great beauty, but they are known and loved for their wonderful personalities. The Bichon is an extremely calm, sweet and affectionate breed. The Bichon stands 9-12 inches at the shoulder. The Bichons size is measured from the top of the shoulders to the ground and ranges between 9 and 12 inches. The adult Bichons weight varies depending upon his size but usually ranges between 10 and 18 pounds. The Bichon is white. Puppies commonly have buff, apricot or cream color on their ears or head that will almost always fade to complete white. Dark pigmentation of nose, and "halos", which surround the eyes, enhance the breed's expression. The dense, curly coat has both soft and coarse hairs. When bathed and brushed, the coat stands off the body and has the feel of plush or velvet. The Bichon requires regular grooming to maintain it's soft, cloud-like coat. Since the Bichon does not shed and has a low dander level, they have been refered to as being "hypo-allergenic".

Their personality is endearing. Bichons are naturally playful, comical, and love to learn tricks. The Bichon Frise is gentle in manner, sensitive, and affectionate. A cheerful attitude is the hallmark of the breed.

The breed is generally healthy and may live to be as old as 18 years of age when properly cared for. The average life span of the Bichon Frise is about 14 years.

ichon History

The Bichon descended from the Barbet or Water-Spaniel, from which came the name "Barbichon," later contracted to "Bichon." The Bichons were divided into four categories: the Bichon Maltais, the Bichon Bolognais, the Bichon Havanais and the Bichon Teneriffe. All originated in the Mediterranean area. Appreciated for their dispositions, the dogs traveled much through antiquity. Frequently offered as items of barter, they were transported by sailors from continent to continent. In the 1300s, Italian sailors rediscovered the little dogs on their voyages and are credited with returning them to the Continent, where they became great favorites with Italian nobility, and as with other dogs of that era, were often cut "lion style."

The Bichon was popular with royalty and later as a circus or performing dog. The Bichon continues to gain admirers with its intelligence, merry eyes, and people loving ways.

Bichon Frise: Recommended Grooming Items, Kennels, Leads, Toys, Bones, Etc., By Steven P. Williams

• ANESTHESIA - Request that your vet use Isoflurane (it is a little more expensive but it is the safest anesthesia for Bichons)
• BARKING - Bark Free™ - The most effective method to tame a dog from barking
• EARS - Rich's Ear Powder - better than drops, drys out hair
• EYE STAINS- Keep hair around eyes clipped short using blunt end scissors. Fresh Fur Gel Ventura Calif..805-650-8193 fax 805-650-8195 also avail at Petsmart or try Stat.One hydrogen Peroxide gel from Walmart. Wipe stained area with Collorium Water (boric acid solution) avail at drugstores. Try switching drinking water to distilled water. See Bhe-Jei Maltese for the complete scoop on eye stains
• FLEAS- Frontline Top Spot from your vet or PET CLUB now sells it. For the house, sprinkle BORAX 20 mule team into the carpet then vacumm or use Fleabusters which is the same ingredients.
• FRONT DOOR - Watch the front door carefully. These guys can get get out the front door quicker than you can. Sadly Bichons are not often returned when found.
• FOOD/WATER - feed a premium dog food - provide plenty fresh water. If eye staining is a problem use distilled water. Introduce new brands of dog food slowly.
• GROOMING/MATTS- Liquid Slicker gets out mats 800-925-8984 or try Cowboy Magic Detangler sold in feed and tack stores.

• GROOM - Bichon pups get their undercoat at about 6 months of age.
• HOUSETRAINING - Bichons (all small dogs) can be difficult to house train unless you are patient and consistent with your training. Poochpads are re-usable weewee pads provides easy access to an elimination area so your dog does not have to hold urine for prolonged hours. Got a problem pee-er? Get a CUMBERBUN.... (belly band) find them at www.nu-nee.com
• HOTSPOTS - Skin problems are prevalent in white haired, pink skinned dogs. For sores use Gold Bonds Medicated Powder (its for humans but is great for canine hotspots) found in any drugstore.
• HARNESS -  Bichons can easily slip a collar, also a collar puts too much pressure on their necks. A good fitting harness is hard to find. I order the 'tiny" (8-15lb) size from 'Our Best Friends', PMB 1531 PO box 9000, Quartzsite, AZ 85346 (520)907-6689. They fit the bichon perfect and are easy to get on and off.
• ITCHING/STAINING - feed soy-wheat-corn free food. See Kibble ingredients
• ITCHING - The Missing Link a natural supplement, also advertised in AKC Gazette and DOG Fancy
• INSURANCE - Veterinary Pet Insurance now covers routine care. Shots, Heartworm meds, Advantage, ...
• MICROCHIP - Micro-chips are injected sub-dermally (under the skin) at the nape of the dogs neck. About the size of a grain of rice, these chips transmit an unique number that when scanned by a vet, identifies the dog and the owner.
• PILLS - To administer pills encase the pill in cream cheese, liverwurst, or peanut butter.
• SHAMPOO - use a whitening shampoo for body and baby shampoo for the head area every 2-4 weeks. Most important is to rinse well.
• SPAY/NUETER- Spay/nueter your puppy before 6 months of age. Why? Many reasons; Males will mark the house until neutered. Females will have a discharge for 3-4 weeks twice a year, and will urinate frequently during their season, their coat will look rusty due to constant licking, and both sexes will be inclined to bolt out the door to find a mate. A bitch that is spayed before her first heat drops her risk of breast tumors from nearly 50% (after 4 heats) to nearly zero. That is a HUGE health benefit. Every heat they have, up to 4, increases the risk. After 4 heats, the breast tumor rate is the same.
• STITCHES - Use Onesies (infantwear) to keep dogs from licking their stitches after a spay/neuter.
• SHOTS - Don't let Pups come in contact with other dogs until ALL shots are done. The puppy shots should be started between the ages of 6-8 weeks and should continue until 16 weeks of age, with shots being given approximately every three weeks. See Vaccinations for the New Puppy
• TATTOO - Tattooing is a permanent, painless procedure which allows dogs to "phone home" if lost and deters theft.Consider tattooing to be an insurance policy. You hope you never need it, but it is priceless when your dog is missing.
• TEETHING - Make some chicken soup (low sodium variety or make it yourself) pour some in ice cubes trays and give them to the puppy. Soak a clean rag in water, wring it out and then freeze it (rolling it up helps) and give it to your puppy to chew on.  Most puppies eat their 'lost' teeth... so much for the tooth fairy.
• TOYS- Good toys are stuffed animals (without any plastic parts), cornstarch bones, and squeaky toys.
